Seems like this thread has languished recently so am gonna ask:
Did anyone watch Ken Burnās American Revolution special on PBS couple weeks back? Didnāt seem as immediate as his Civil War mini-series. Dependent on too many maps and static portraiture, rather than not yet invented photographs, would be my guess. Also the background music wasnāt as good. Is Burns losing his touch?
Difficult subject, due to the slavery issue. Burns tried to be even-handed. Didnāt realize Washington was one of the largest slave-holders in the South or the most prosperous. Glad Annette Gordon-Reed was a commentator. Due to reading her books, I tromped around Monticello in the rain several years ago, attempting to see if the Jefferson burying ground had room for the Presidentās Hemming descendants(excuse for not allowing further burials). Pretty full after 225+ years and barricaded w/ high wrought iron fencing, hoi-polloi canāt stroll among the graves. TPTB could put up a plaque, I thought.
Not one African-American historic interpreter on that day; not even the slave-quarter interpreter, who did admit TJ, not his brother, fathered some of Sally Hemmings children, when I asked the direct questionā¦.
Not yet. A friend did, though, and has spoken reverently about it several times since then, seemingly apropos of nothingābut always looking a little shell-shocked. Which is what intrigues me, given his particular credentials/experiences/career. Itās haunting him a little bit.
Maybe related to #Whamageddon that I just learned about, I caught this episode of Bobās Burgers (a family favorite) last night and discovered the Cheese Royaleā¦
Think itās being re-run this week-end. Or you can pay $60, become a PBS member, which is what we did.
Iām not one who believes only the same ethnic/racial groups should publish/translate/criticize same groupās work. Or judge those who lived centuries before by present centuryās standards. Not fair.
Difficult not to, though, on such a basic issue-do seem like hypocrites, especially Jefferson, who was, I think, a genius and knew better-and admitted it, unlike many slave-owners who blustered about slavery ābeing in the bibleā.
Ah well, weāre all human w/ human frailties and neither he, nor Washington, are the esthetes I was taught in high-school. Washington, actually, a very brave man-not a mere lead-from-behind administrator, like Eisenhower, say. Anyone know a really good bio of Washington, which rescues him as McCullough rescued John Adams?
I have not seen his new work. I hope to get the chance at some point.
His focus shifts with each series he puts out. His Civil War documentary was focused heavily on the war itself, with smaller attention paid to issues not immediately related. His documentary on WWII, by contrast, spent relatively little time talking about the war. There was almost nothing about the various campaigns, battles, commanders. The focus of the work was primarily on the nation and people of the United States, how they were impacted by the war, how it exacerbated social unrest and catalyzed shifts in trendsā¦
It would not surprise me to find that his Revolutionary War has its own focus. For fans of his Civil War series this might end in disappointment.
An even larger margin of victory than the regular-season matchup w/ BYU - which beat every team it played, except Tech - 34-7.
Texas Tech is the only one of the āBig Fourā (Texas Christian, Texas A&M, & Texas being the others) which has never won an āofficialā College Football National Championship in the āPoll Eraā - might this be the year?
Just signed up to start our yearly four months of Sling so we will have ESPN and be able to see the college playoff games ⦠and then March Madness. Might even watch some of those old movie favorites on there while we got it.
Our area doesnāt have cable and we donāt want a year or two contract with one of the satellite companies.
Congrats! Your favorite Texas Tech is # 4 in the FBS! (Go Red Raiders!)
Will always have a soft-spot for the university since one of my kids received a partial scholarship offer from them! When we made the college visit, visited a Tex-Mex restaurant near campus which made table-side guacamole, the best Iāve had in my life!
Though son decided to accept a full scholarship from an in-state university, Iāve been back to Lubbock many times. Has a great book sale in the autumn.
