đŸ“ș What I'm watching

All this talk of murder mystery shows makes me think of our recent experience with Father Brown. We’ve enjoyed the newer ones with Mark Williams; nice bit of humor, and good (but maybe not great) characters and stories.
Recently, we got a chance to see the original series, from the 1970s. Very slow paced; murder didn’t happen until the second half of the show. By that point, there were at least 3-4 people that you were really hoping would be the victim. Watched the first episode, decided to give it a try again; I don’t think we even finished the second ep.

Adult movies gone too far??!

My husband was an immediate fan from Brokenwood’s first season Took me a while to get into it!!(Couldn’t understand what the NZ’s were saying before adding the captions)

Recently, watched the several seasons of Rosemary & Thyme and enjoyed them. ..

Watched couple of new episodes of VERA last night. Okay, but soon got tired of the back-and -forth (spoiler)between Vera and her old sergeant, now DI, Joe Ashworth.

New season of Harry Wild(Acorn) begins mid-Month, also 9-1-1, now on ABC. I’m a big fan of tough woman Angela Bassett(Sgt. Athena Grant)-barely believe she’s 65!! Along w/ Blue Bloods, in its last season, the only network dramas we watch. .

Thanks for the tip re: Dr. Blake.

I prefer the original series with Essie Davis. What’s not to love about a heroine named after an ancient Greek courtesan? The costuming in both series is fantastic. But I find the “modern” remake a bit plodding.

Thanks for the tip. Somehow the new Vera episodes hadn’t crossed by radar.

To echo a comment upthread, it’s nice to see middle age characters get some spotlight.

I agree that the original is better; I think much of my attraction to the Modern one is the fact that I remember then tail-end of that era, and my sister is significantly older, so I was exposed to a lot of those cultural references as a child.
The 20s I can relate to only as history (I’m old, but not THAT old!)

And, I would be happy to see more eps of either one.

Caught this South Park rerun (from March 2023) last night and very much enjoyed it, for many reasons: The South Park Episode That Mocks AI By Using AI.

True to its nature, the show didn’t just comment on the rise of AI from the sidelines. Instead, it went full South Park style by showcasing how artificial intelligence can serve as a useful tool, while also pointing out its ethical implications, only to then mock the entire concept of AI-generated content by using AI to generate the resolution of the episode. This results in an interesting premise with a nonsensical conclusion, which only further proves the entire point of the episode.

So clearly Amazon ad data is not used to select what ads they show you on Prime Video/Freeve. We do not have a cat, yet I am seeing multiple ads for cat food or a Bistle steam cleaner to clean up your perfect cats mess.

Time to stop viewing our friend ASV’s “Fun With Wild Animals” thread, obviously.

Every time you give an image of the SAS’ unofficial mascot Ollie a thumbs-up/like vote, one or another web-scraping Amabot probably takes it as a sign that being fond of our feline friends constitutes carte blanche admission that you MUST have one that needs whatever goods in that category Amazon is promoting.

It worked!!!

We used the toggle switch to send all cat and Bistle ads to @Pepper_Thine_Angus.

This is a correctable error. We await your POA.

Doggo is the master of the house. Neighbors have quite a few barn cats that roam their property and ours

Binged Apples Never Fall over the weekend. Critics complained about it, but I enjoyed it, though tbf I never read the book (and there are differences). I like a good crime whodunnit AND generational family trauma (but also just awful people and awful choices), but mainly I like Annette Bening, Sam Neill (Event Horizon notwithstanding), The Fugitive, older actors getting attention, mama drama, Pete (“Plop”/New Jim) from The Office, and Annie from Community.

Oh, come on! Event Horizon is a great film. Though, I can see why it’s definitely not for everyone.

“The Gentlemen” - Netflix

After watching the first 11 seasons of Doctor Who (through the Pertwee episodes), we’re taking a break for a few months before beginning Tom Baker (my favorite.)

Just started Masters of the Air, about the 100th Bomb Group in WWII. My Dad was in that group, a machine gunner on a B-17. He never spoke about the war, at least not to us kids.

Also on this series. Episode 6.
Dumb Money was a fun movie if any of you liked, The Big Short, or Margin Call.
Shogun is on deck for the weekend.

I know where you’re coming from. Dr. Who is fun, but sometimes can get a little old. Breaks are needed.

We’re currently working our way through the MCU movies, going in chronological (not release) order. Not sure if I can keep up the pace to see them all before our special deal on Disney+ runs out. Might need a significant break, even though they’re fun (if even rather mindless).

Just finished the Gentlemen as well.

Fun - entertaining.
You could pick it apart all day if you wanted to.
I always love when a stoner guy is given too much access.

I was also surprised by HALO. Loved seasons 1 & 2

I just finished watching an episode of “Epic Train Journeys From Above” on PBS. This episode was “Glacier Express” and described the journey of a passenger train that travels through the the Alps in Switzerland during the winter.

The scenery during the journey was breathtakingly spectacular. This is definitely a bucket list type of journey. The program included behind-the-scenes stories about what goes into making this journey so memorable–gourmet cuisine, train maintenance and more. My favorite part was where they showed how they create small avalanches in order to prevent larger ones.

Now I’m all excited about planning a train journey. :bullettrain_side: :railway_car: :steam_locomotive: :station:
