Well, it’s 4AM and I just got back from the 24/7 Animal ER. Ollie had some sort of flare up from his dormant herpes (they think) and he was in pain and was having trouble seeing.
Couple of shots and drops and $505 later, he’s home.
Weird thing (never seen this in a cat before) was he wasn’t rubbing his eyes and they weren’t tearing up or anything but they didn’t look right at all so I knew he was in trouble. I thought he had something going on with his brain and it was his good eye that was the problem this time. Stress can bring this (flare up) on and he had been slightly off since his little incident with the window blinds string last Fri.
It was like a switch. He was absolutely fine today and has been for months. All of a sudden he was not himself at all and wouldn’t play or anything. He was playing when we got home so that’s a good sign.
Hopefully a good night sleep and all the meds on board will begin the healing process. This poor little guy has been through so much in his 6 months on this planet.
The vets and techs fell in love with him like everyone does. Vet wanted to take him home with her. I offered after she said that - lol… This guy is a handful. It’s nice to be in an area with a 24/7 Animal Hospital just 11 mins away.
He’s our 7th rescue cat over the last 25 years and I have never seen anything this acute before which is why we ran out of here with him at 9:30. 3 hour wait, just to get into the second waiting room in the back. Great place, I’ve never been there before. Very busy though! There’s only one other 24/7 Vet around this area and it’s 60 miles easy on LI.
I don’t think any of you live close to me but this place is in Carle Place LI if anyone is near me and needs an emergency vet. Crappy wait time but everyone was very nice and they seem to be good at what they do. My vet recommended them for overnight emergencies.
Time for bed for his tired, worried cat dad.
ETA - I responded to myself from 2 days ago when I noted how sleepy he was. The issue must have already started then and he was hiding it like cats do.
Not bad for NY. $195 to walk in the door. Everything else is gravy…
That place was PACKED!
He’s pretty good today but I don’t like the way his lungs sound and the long acting antibiotic shot is really designed for skin infections (eye stuff too). Awaiting a call back from my sister in law’s sister (our regular vet) to see if she wants to put him on oral antibiotics as well.
She’s working today but the other vet called out sick so she’s solo. It’s gonna be awhile before we connect.
Yes, that would have scored high on the stress meter. Nature has played a cruel trick there. The slight roughness that makes the claws such good weapons and such good grappling hooks for climbing makes it easy for them to get caught like that any time they have their weight pulling down on the claw(s).
Annnnnnd - someone got tired of waiting for me to play with him. I’m working in my MIL’s place tonight and hanging out with him because he can’t get along with my other cat. Well… It’s her that’s the problem. Guess my MIL has a new cat when she gets back from her summer place. Good thing it’s just 12 steps away from us (upstairs)…
Mr. Sploot better figure out his eye issue because this is getting annoying…
We were referred to an animal ophthalmologist by the animal ER (which apparently is a very rare thing) about 40 miles from here in case he needs further analysis of the root cause of his issues.
Hope it doesn’t come to that. He’s good at the moment…
