Got some not so great news tonight. Eddie’s Creatinine level went up to 1.3. BUN went up as well, but it’s kinda where it should be. It dropped below normal from over hydration yesterday on the IV.

They got some urine from him (poor thing) and did a USG test which actually turned out to be very good, which means his kidneys appear to be OK.

He didn’t drink a thing from release last night to this latest test but peed 5X from last night to tonight. He also didn’t eat much since release but is being sweet and playful.

A healthy Creatinine level in a cat is between .8 and 2.4. With lily poisoning, it can spike into the 40’s. By the time you get into the 40’s, there’s no coming back.

I got the results at 9:50 and immediately called our primary vet that has late hours on Wednesdays. They are open till 10. I was looking for Eddie’s baseline for Creatinine when he had his blood work prior to his clip and chip… The hospital vet was in the room while I was on with our primary. Back then, he was at 1.2… She was happy to hear that. There weren’t any lilies here in Jan…

Anyway, they were initially very concerned to see it rise 30% in 24 hours, but became less concerned when they got the good results on the USG.

So Eddie got some fluids under the skin and was sent home. We need to go back to the hospital at 10 tomorrow night for more testing.

He did eat when we got home so that’s a good sign. He’s clearly being affected by stress and not being able to come down to our house because Ollie was being an A-hole at the cat door today.

To complicate matters, tomorrow is my daughter’s college graduation. So nobody is going to be here for 7 hours. Hopefully Eddie uses that time to catch up on some ZZZ’s. Now that it’s not 1000 degrees outside, the house will be more comfortable. MIL isn’t a fan of AC but she has had it on 75 for the cat… We keep our place much cooler than that…

Heading into day 4, any poison should have already passed through his system with the aggressive treatment he’s had to date. 72 hours (we are in hour 77 now) is really the scientific cutoff for when kidney damage would have developed. .

My hope is that his numbers are stable or drop a little tomorrow and we can call this a saved little life. I wouldn’t object to him getting another round of fluid under the skin as a final flush. Then we can reunite the boys and things can get back to normal around here. Tomorrow is day 5 of this nightmare. If something bad was going to happen, it should have happened already. He was forced to vomit twice before hour 1 was over and was hooked to an IV for the next 48 non-stop. That is the best and only treatment for this.

So we aren’t done yet, but hopefully we are.

Numbers were good tonight. He is considered cured. We don’t have to go back. He was eating and drinking better today. Had a feeling he was good to go.

No damage done, other than to our wallet.

Confirmed zero damage to his kidneys.

We (me) did a bad thing by bringing a flower arrangement with a lily in it into the house.

Then we did a really good thing by acting lightening fast.

His highest creatinine number was 1.3. There are reports of other lily cats hitting numbers in the 20’s and recovering.

Endless research the last few days leads me to believe that we probably could have gotten away with outpatient treatment with daily Sub-Q fluids and testing. But the hospitalization was the sure thing.

Little buddy got tortured since Sunday but he will forget about all this soon. He also finally got smart tonight. We had a real hard time getting him into the carrier to go get tested. Not sure we could do this again anytime soon.

Now onto the next project - getting the band (the boys) back together. Hoping to make that happen tomorrow.

Yea, Ollie is a jerk. Another failed attempt today. And Eddie is not happy that he can’t be with us in our house (it’s a 2-family). MIL just left for her summer place this AM so that part of the house is empty now, in terms of other inhabitants.

So I just locked ollie in the basement with me while I work so Eddie can be free-range.

He’s def still stressed and hasn’t eaten much today which is strange. A nice reunited sitch would prob cure his blues and get him eating.

This is going to take a few days. Ollie is going to be spending a lot of time locked up with me if he can’t behave.

No. You did a neutral thing with the best intentions and no awareness of any possible problems or that he would ingest anything. Do not fret another time over that. Celebrate that you responded quickly and knowledgeably, that you could provide the care he needed, and that this is a lesson learned.

When we introduce cats, I use Acepromazine. It dilutes the panicky component of cat’s reaction to something new.

We will see how it goes. My primary vet is family so I am sure I can get this drug without an issue.

Ollie is the issue, not Eddie. Eddie just wants to be friends and see his friend. It’s sad that Ollie is reacting this way.

Thankfully my Son agreed to sleep upstairs tonight with Eddie (MIL’s place). She’s not here. Hopefully it helps because Eddie still isn’t really eating. He’s eating enough to survive without liver issues but it’s nothing compared to his usual intake. He’s eaten what he normally eats in 1 day in 6…

We are trying… It’s not a physical issue I hope.

Eddie was down with us for about 7 hours today with Ollie locked in the basement - mostly with me.

We just had a totally uneventful 10 min togetherness between Ollie and Eddie.

We will do that a few more times today, followed by a break. Then it’s 24/7 back together.

Ollie got pretty upset, pretty quickly yesterday when I tried. This was good.

Not a great update. Eddie has been eating and drinking very very little since he got home. Which means he’s probably eaten as much in the last week as he normally would in a day / day and a half.

Not drinking much either. Cat owners will know just how dangerous this can be. Vet thinks it’s stress but I went at 1:30 this AM to the vet ER (without Eddie) to pick up an appetite stimulant. Had the glove on to put it in his ear at 9am and he ate a little, so I didn’t.

Gave it to him around 1PM and he’s eaten a couple times since and drank some. I went and got another water fountain today as well and he’s drank from it, so guess that’s good.

He’s back sleeping in our closet now. Hopefully healing.

Last thing I want to do is take him back and stress him some more, so hopefully time heals this food aversion / anxiety.

We are monitoring him ultra-closely. Skipped the trip upstate with the family to keep an eye on / take care of Eddie. Haven’t missed a trip up for Memorial Day in 29 years. Weather sucks anyway.

We’ve had rain all weekend, and when I finally paused to a light drizzle, I got out for a walk. There was a DUCK in the street! (it’s 1/2 mile + to any body of water).

When in doubt, the vet - or you if you have a helper - can give the cat subcutaneous fluids. It has pulled one of ours back from the brink.

We made some progress today. Fingers crossed, this continues. :folded_hands:

Stress is the likely cause. I was told I had a perfectly healthy cat when we walked out of the hospital.

Not stressing him out unless it’s an absolute emergency. Right now things appear to be under control.

When I picked up the appetite stimulant, which seems to be helping, I was told by the tech that they had never seen a more stressed out cat in their facility.

The reality is he was pretty good when he came home last Tues night. Then he had to go get re-tested last Wed. More stress. Then they made us come back again on Thursday for no reason, adding more stress.

Probably only doing a half dose of the stimulant tomorrow, if at all (depends on if he continues to eat on his own without it.)

That stimulant is taxing on the kidneys and liver. Those organs are already taxed from not eating and drinking for more than a week. Yes, he’s eaten everyday. But not much until today.

Thank you for he update on Eddie. Poor guy. You’re right, it is likely stress from repeated visits to the vet. There is no way that you can explain to him the reason for all these sudden changes to his routine. Right now what he needs is a continued normal routine without and more changes. Many pets and snuggles would help too. :heart:

Has the Eddie & Ollie situation improved? While stress is likely the number 1 cause, could missing Ollie be another contributor to his low appetite? If they can be happily together that could help the stress level too.

The boys are back together and have been since Sat evening.

But you’re right. All Eddie wanted was to be with Ollie but when we first tried to put them together on Fri morning, Ollie violently hissed at him and lunged and Eddie got upset because he was weak and scared.

Eddie first came home on Tues night. Went back on Wed night for tests, and again on Thurs night before he was cleared.

I’m sure it was the combination of the hospital stay / subsequent visits + the outright rejection by his buddy when he got home that sent him into this starvation / rejection of food and water mode.

He’s eating today, without the app stimulant. I don’t want to give it to him unless he needed it.

It’s not good for the kidneys or liver, and having a cat that hasn’t eaten in many days gorge themselves can be deadly too…

Very sensitive / fragile creatures. Unsure how strays survive outside.

I am cautiously optimistic at this point that we may be going down a positive road with this whole thing. The stress of this situation did more damage than the lily pollen.

Because they were able to induce vomiting twice in under 1 hour from ingestion was probably good enough. They could have done sub-q fluids that day + 2 more days outpatient, and he probably would have been better off.

But all you need to do is google lilies and cats to have the :poop: scared out of you into going all the way with the treatment. He will be turning 1 in 4 days and I am really hopeful that we will be able to have a happy celebration.
